Bio-data of hon'ble Election Commissioner, Mr. Abdur Rahmanel Masud
Mr. Abdur Rahmanel Mashud was born on 1 January 1958 in Baro Jethail village of Dhamrai Upazila under Dhaka District, into a respected and noble Muslim family. His father, the late Maulana Ramzan Ali, served as the Principal of Aramnagar Alia Madrasa, Sarishabari, and Madrasah-e-Muhammadia Arabia, Jatrabari, Dhaka.
Mr. Mashud obtained his LL.B. (Honours) degree from the University of Dhaka in 1977, securing 5th position in the Second Class, and his LL.M. degree in 1978, securing 2nd position in the Second Class. He joined government service on 20 April 1983 as a Munsif (Assistant Judge). He later served on deputation to the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh as First Assistant Registrar and Deputy Registrar–I. On 10 April 2000, he was promoted to the rank of District Judge and subsequently served with distinction as Judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Mymensingh, Judge of the Speedy Trial Tribunal–4, Dhaka, and as District and Sessions Judge in Chuadanga, Rajshahi, and Cumilla.
Most recently, from 2013 to 2016, Mr. Mashud served as a Member of Administrative Tribunal–1, Dhaka. Upon completion of his long and distinguished judicial career, he retired from government service on 1 January 2017 upon attaining the Post-Retirement Leave (PRL).
In addition to his judicial career, he served as a part-time faculty member at private universities. Prior to joining the Bangladesh Election Commission, he was employed as Chief Legal Officer of Janata Bank PLC.
Mr. Mashud is a prolific legal author, having authored eighteen books on various branches of law, including election law, anti-corruption law, land law, and the Code of Criminal Procedure.
In 2008, he was a member of a government delegation led by the Hon’ble Chief Justice of Bangladesh, during which he visited Thailand, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland. He has also traveled to India and Saudi Arabia.
In his personal life, Mr. Mashud is the proud father of one son, a banker, and one daughter, an engineer. His spouse is a Professor at a government college.
