Bio-data of hon'ble Election Commissioner, Begum Tahmida Ahmad
Begum Tahmida Ahmed was graciously appointed as an Election Commissioner by His Excellency the President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh on 21 November 2024 and formally assumed the responsibilities of the office upon taking the oath on 24 November 2024.
Begum Tahmida Ahmed was born on 30 October 1960 in Sunamganj Sadar Upazila of Sunamganj District, into a respected Muslim family. Her father was the late Ali Farid Ahmed, and her mother was the late Arfa Ahmed.
She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Soil Science from the University of Dhaka in 1985 and subsequently earned her Master’s degree in Soil Science from the same university in 1986. Prior to joining the Bangladesh Civil Service (Administration) Cadre, she served for two years as an Assistant Soil Scientist at the Bangladesh Forest Research Institute, Chattogram.
After successfully passing the 11th Bangladesh Civil Service Examination, she joined government service on 1 April 1993 as a member of the BCS (Administration) Cadre. She served for a decade in field administration as a Judicial Magistrate in Narsingdi, Kishoreganj, and Netrokona districts. From 2001 onward, she held the position of Senior Assistant Secretary in several ministries, including the Ministry of Agriculture; the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock; the Ministry of Education; and the Ministry of Youth and Sports. As Deputy Secretary, she served in the Ministry of Industries and the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment. She later served as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism. Most recently, she served as Director of the Department of Jute under the Ministry of Textiles and Jute, from which position she retired from government service.
Throughout her professional career, she undertook numerous training programs at home and abroad. She participated in specialized training programs in Malaysia, India, Denmark, the United Kingdom, and Thailand.
Upon completing a long and distinguished career in public service, Begum Tahmida Ahmed retired from government service on 29 October 2019.
In her personal life, Begum Tahmida Ahmed is a mother of one daughter. Her spouse, Mr. A. K. M. Ehsanul Haque, is an officer of the 11th batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Administration) Cadre.
